How to store vanilla pods

Vanilla pods that are stored correctly will improve with time and will last almost indefinitely though usual recommendation is that they should be used within 2 years.

Few Simple Steps on how to store Vanilla pod:

  • - If there is only a few pods, the simplest way is to put the vanilla pods covered in the fine sugar jar. The fine sugar will act as airtight to the pods and sugar is some sort of natural preservative. Another bonus benefit is you will also get the aroma sugar too!

  • - Store vanilla pods in an airtight container (ideally glass) in a cool, dark place. Do not refrigerate the pods as the cold will dry them out and may promote a particular type of vanilla mold.

  • - Optionally you may use cling film to pack the vanilla prior to storing in an airtight container ensuring that all air has been squeezed out.

  • - Stored vanilla pod needs constant airing. Ensure that your hands are clean, remove pods from airtight container and expose to air for at least 15 minutes. Massaging the pods lengthwise by hand during this period also helps to disperse the vanilla seeds inside. After airing, put the pods back in airtight container. We recommend you do this at least 6 times a year.

  • - If the vanilla pods do dry out a bit, you can soften them by placing them in warm water or milk just before use.
